PREWAPHARM

Who they are
With approximately 42,500 students, the University of Münster is one of the largest universities in Germany, offering high-quality education and research across more than 120 degree programmes. Together with the University Hospital Münster, the university contributes to advancing modern healthcare and environmental research through strong international collaborations.

Who represents the University of Münster in PREWAPHARM
Within PREWAPHARM, the work is carried out by researchers from the Microbial Biotechnology and Ecology group and the Environmental Hygiene Department, including Bodo Philipp, Johannes Holert, Sarah Peschkes and Thorsten Kuczius. Their expertise spans microbial biotechnology, environmental hygiene and advanced water monitoring.

Their role in PREWAPHARM
The University of Münster leads a pilot focused on developing bioaugmented filter systems to improve the removal of pharmaceutical residues from water, particularly in decentralized treatment systems for healthcare facilities and remote communities. In addition, the university contributes to joint monitoring strategies, communication activities and knowledge exchange across North-West Europe.

Why this topic matters
Pharmaceutical pollution in water poses significant risks to both environmental and public health. Biotechnological solutions, such as bioaugmentation, offer promising approaches to improve the removal of these contaminants.

Looking ahead
Through interdisciplinary collaboration between healthcare experts, water technology providers and researchers, the University of Münster aims to develop innovative and scalable water treatment solutions that contribute to cleaner and safer water systems.
