Their role in PREWAPHARM
As a project partner, VITO is responsible for the coordination of the water technology pilots. In this role, VITO deploys its state-of-the-art pilot installations to demonstrate the removal of pharmaceuticals from (waste)water as close to the source as possible. These pilot activities are carried out at dedicated demonstration locations. In addition, VITO supports knowledge dissemination and contributes to the development of regional action plans.
Why this topic matters
The issue of pharmaceutical residues in water is of significant importance, as water quality is essential for both environmental and public health. While pharmaceuticals play a vital role in healthcare, their presence in the water cycle can pose environmental and societal risks. As the use of medicines cannot be avoided, effective measures within the water system are required to mitigate their impact.
Looking ahead
Through this collaboration, VITO hopes to exchange best practices and build on each other’s experiences to identify solutions that are not only technically effective but also widely supported by stakeholders. In addition to strategically prioritize efforts that create real impact, by aligning their work with what is feasible and scalable across the chain. And last but not least: energize one another through mutual inspiration and learning, creating a momentum that acts as a flywheel for broader change.
